Sophia Jones – Christian Women in Media
Sophia Jones is Director of Communications for the Diocese of Southwark, one of the largest dioceses in the Church of England, covering all of south London and east Surrey. Her department is responsible for media relations, the website and social media, the monthly Diocesan newspaper, The Bridge and publications resourcing parishes in this vast and diverse area. This year Sophia celebrates 30 years of working in Communications.
She started as a Press Assistant to the Africa Press Officer at Christian Aid in 1992 and has worked in the Press Offices and Communications teams some of the world’s leading humanitarian organisations – Christian Aid, Tearfund, World Vision, the International Rescue Committee.
She has covered stories as far ranging as food crisis in Ethiopia, child health in India, women’s empowerment projects, youth programmes, to the Referendum and elections and war in South Sudan. For six years, she was the IRC’s Horn and East Africa Media and Information Manager, based in Nairobi, covering 10 countries and ensuring that the world heard the voices of the people living in this region.
She worked with local and international Journalists and correspondents as well as covered a wide range of stories from the refugee camps in northern Kenya, Ethiopia, Burundi and eastern Chad. Most recently Sophia was Communications Manager for Mothers’ Union, a global movement of 4 million members.
A breast cancer survivor, Sophia is an advocate for Macmillan and raises awareness on their behalf. She is passionate about storytelling and Communications and believes that the Lord has directed her path every step of the way.
