Irene Muthemba

I am Irene Muthemba, mother of three boys living in Bristol. Two and a half years ago, my world was shattered when my son’s life was taken in a senseless act of violence. He was 19 and a half. In the weeks that followed, as we prepared to lay him to rest, God’s hand carried us through the darkest season of our lives. I found peace knowing that Eddie had given his life to Christ only weeks before his passing.

Love has been my anchor and strength. It’s the reason I’m compelled to advocate for peace in our city and beyond, as we confront the devastating reality of knife crime. I speak to young people whenever possible about peace kindness compassion healing and choosing life rather than anger and revenge, which leads to destruction. Eddie’s legacy is rooted in love, peace, and honouring life.

With my Church , E5 Bristol, we launched the Eddie King Football Tournament, which then grew into the annual Eddie King Sports Tournament. Youth from across Bristol come together not only to compete, but to engage in conversations about healing, healthy conflict resolution, and building positive relationships. I have witnessed lives being changed, hope and faith shared.

A local park was dedicated in Eddie’s memory, a safe space for reflection and community events, helping young people understand the true cost of violence. As this work expands, Eddie’s friends formed the Eddie King Foundation, a youth-led initiative raising awareness and funds for local projects that support and empower young people. Last July, on Eddie’s anniversary, we hosted a charity dinner raising funds for local youth charities. I joined Powerful Parents. We are parents who have lost children to violence. We advocate for peace and hope to work with schools, colleges and communities nationwide. God’s mercy can heal this traumatised generation.
